Phase 2: Rhetorical Analysis & “Peer Profile”

Phase 2 focused on interviewing and working with a peer from our class to reflect on our Phase 1 assignment of the written narratives. For Part 1 of this assignment, I analyzed a rhetorical strategy used in a peer’s Language and Literacy Narrative. My goal was not to critique the quality of the writing but to explore how the author’s rhetorical choices influenced the reader’s experience. First, I briefly summarized the narrative in about 100 words, providing context and a sense of the text. Then, I identified a rhetorical strategy that stood out to me, described it, and explained why I found it interesting. I focused on one specific example, offering several observations about how the strategy worked and what the author likely intended to achieve. Finally, I analyzed how the author’s genre, language, and other stylistic choices fit their purpose and audience, supporting my analysis with evidence from the text.

Below is the first draft of Part 2 of this assignment. For this assignment, I transformed and extended what I wrote in Part 1 into a 5-6 page magazine-style “profile” of my peer as a writer. My goal was to introduce them as a writer and analyze the different rhetorical strategies, or “writerly choices,” they used in their Language and Literacy Narrative. To do this, I interviewed my peer to learn more about their language and literacy background and to discuss their rhetorical strategies in the narrative. I also shared my analysis from Part 1 with them to check if my observations aligned with their intentions as a writer.

Finally, after more peer revision, a final draft was produced and is attached below.
